DAU Head of the Theoretical Physics Department (1940-1962) Institute years: 1938-1968 1905 Born in Constantinople on February 24th into a family of teachers and musicians. 1922 Moves to Petrograd, fleeing from the Greco-Turkish War. 1923 Graduate student at the Institute of Physics and Technology (USSR), supervised by Abram Ioffe. 1925 Defends his thesis. 1932 Works with Niels Bohr in Berlin, London, Paris, Prague, Copenhagen. Arrives in Kharkov, holds the position of Professor at the Kharkov Institute. 1933 Acquainted with Nora. 1937 Moves to Moscow with Nora. Meets academician A.A. Krupitsa, with whom he starts to cooperate. 1938 Arrested on April 28th. 1939 Released from prison in October at the request of academician A.A. Krupitsa. 1940 In May, becomes head of the Department of Theoretical Physics at the Institute. 1946 Full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. 1948 Published lectures on general physics. 1949 Marries Nora in May. Son, Denis, born December 21st. 1951 Becomes a member of the Royal Academy of Danish Sciences. 1952 Headed a secret project in Molotov. 1953 Works on a secret project in Novosibirsk. 1962 Gets seriously injured in a car accident, goes into a long rehabilitation.
