Synopsis
Katya, a young librarian, believes in love, but her ideals are crushed by reality. After a string of disappointing affairs, Katya finally finds tenderness and understanding in the arms of her colleague, a journalist called Tanya. But then the First Department interferes: the state security services see this relationship as unacceptable for a Soviet woman.

The circle widens and serves as the introduction of Dau, who is enigmatic from the get-go, but just a side player in this psychological unnerving focus on Katya. Supremely gripping individually within the series while further expanding the dread surrounding the wider sphere of living within the regime. The series offers so many layers to reinforce its overarching themes, both universally satisfying as well as a fabulous pinpoint within a dark history, and wonderful dramatic presence by the actors to boot. Great stuff, amazing series.
